It's a school day, and Allison is waiting for Lydia on the steps of her front porch.

It's been a long week and she isn't sure she can handle driving on her own today - especially when she might be tracked. Thankfully, Lydia texted her this morning, offering a ride as if she already knew that the other girl needed it.

And she did.

Allison isn't sure what to think anymore. Between her grandfather replacing the principal, and her mom taking over as substitute ... she's seeing far too much of her family to be comfortable. But they'd gone off to school before her and ... right now, she needs her best friend.

Things are more than a little weird these days, everyone acts like they have had a personality transplant and its reeking havoc on her social life. It was something no one got to mess with and she was going to start putting it to rights with a shopping trip after school.

She spends hours before her mirror, covering the dark circles under her eyes and making herself look perfect. There is no there to see her hand tremble when she thinks she hears someone behind her. She isn't crazy!

In typical Lydia fashion, she is ten minutes late to pick up Allison. She hoots the horn and throws the passenger door open. While she waits she reapplies her lip gloss for the third time.

Allison gets to her feet when she hears Lydia's car approach, haphazardly checking her phone for the time and making a mental note that if she wants to get to class on time, that window of opportunity passed about ten minutes ago.

Well, whatever.

Her grandfather and her mom can just ... deal with it.

She gets into the car and throws her bag into the backseat.

"Hey," she says. "Thanks for picking me up. I wasn't mentally equipped to drive to school today."
